Create Your Own Interior Story

Firstly, take a look at your wardrobe. It is likely that colours and fabrics you feel comfortable wearing are ones you will feel comfortable living with too. We are not suggesting a denim sofa here, but why not use your favourite green top as inspiration for your curtains? If there is a colour you prefer or a colour that is prominent in your wardrobe, chances are you’ll know what colours are best to pair with it which you then can carry through to your interior!

Nobody else has lived your life, therefore nobody has the same experiences, tastes and thoughts as you. Use this to your advantage. All too often we see similar interiors popping up online, but dig down into your own personal style and you will create a scheme that is uniquely yours. A great way to get started is with a mind map or mood board. Creatives use these to get their ideas down on paper and find themes or links. Write down only what you love - - - colours, materials, scents, foods and places you have travelled. Then look for links between these. For example you might love linen, holidays in warm climates and fresh foods. Use this as a starting point to consider introducing colours that sit with these ideals such as yellows or a pale blue and introduce linen as a texture in your soft furnishings or linen curtains and blinds.

Share your personality! All too often people are afraid to express themselves in their interior design, afraid of getting it wrong, or not having a home that fits with the current trends. It’s time to forget all that! As soon as you start to create a home showcasing your life, mementos and photographs you will have a timeless style that will last a lifetime. When you have finished work for the day, clear all paraphernalia relating to it away and instead dress the space for your current activity or to showcase your personality to your guests - - - candles, flowers, crockery, draw the curtains and blinds and settle in for a relaxing or fun time. How can we relax, cook and enjoy a glass of wine on a Friday night if the kitchen table is covered in laptops, note pads and empty coffee mugs?!

To make this process easier ask yourself how you want to feel in your space. For an inspiring kitchen, show off your collection of pots, ceramics or cookbooks. A relaxing bedroom is the place for your favourite cushions and throws and happy family photographs. For an interesting hallway, or even cloakroom, why not consider framing some of your achievements. These will serve as a great talking point for guests who didn’t know about your skills as a lion tamer!
