Stress Free Guide to Moving Home

It’s no secret that moving home is high on the list of life’s most stressful things to do. It’s an emotional time, both physically and mentally draining. It can be stressful leaving friends, maybe family, moving to a new area. The physical demands of dismantling furniture, packing boxes, not to mention the emotional aspect of trawling through all of our personal items, all takes its toll. On top of all of this, there are so many elements that are out of our control and keep us awake at night.

Having said that, there are things you can do to make it go as smoothly as possible and we’re here to help.

Make it Simple

  • Declutter as you pack, it will make life much easier on the other side! Click here for tips.
  • Pack a box of essentials for your first night: chargers, kettle and teabags, toilet paper, soap, towel, whatever you need to make life easier in the midst of potential madness!
  • Leave kids and pets out of the equation if possible, getting someone to look after them for the day while everything is being moved in.
  • Label the top and sides of all your boxes with room and contents info.
  • Get ordering early - even in this age of next day deliveries, it’s still hugely stressful to think of everything that you need.
  • Make your new place as homely as possible early on.

It’s hard to keep on top of what you should be ordering and when. Don’t be left sitting on a hard, cold floor or hanging sheets over your windows while you wait for your curtains to arrive! Here’s a handy timeline to help you know when you should be ordering what, based on typical lead times for delivery. The things that take the longest are anything bespoke like made to order furniture, anything not in stock, carpets and flooring, curtains, blinds and appointments with tradespeople.

Items that are not made to order and are in stock should be delivered within 1-5 days. This includes large items like appliances, fridges, washing machines, dryers etc. Be aware that some white goods may require fitting, so it could take a little longer.

Once you have tried out colour samples in your new home, paint can usually be delivered as soon as the next day. However if you’re like some of us at Stitched, the time between receiving the paint and using the paint may be considerable. No judgement.

If you are keeping your furniture, you could give it a makeover… Did you know that many of our fabrics can be used to upholster furniture? Check out our fabric selections.

Make it Home

One of the easiest ways to make a house feel warm and homely, even when it’s still stacked to the brim with unopened boxes, is by dressing the windows. Installing your curtains + blinds early on in the moving process has many benefits:

  • Sound absorption: take away that echoey, new house sound.
  • Heat insulation: new homes always have teething problems, one of them can be getting the heating sorted. If your new home is a little chilly, having curtains will help to keep it warm and cosy.
  • Privacy: For those moments of sheer frustration, you can at least cry behind closed curtains!
You might choose to wait until you’ve moved in to decide on your curtains and blinds, or you might have them pre-ordered and ready to go up on day 1. Whichever way you do it, our timeline remains the same.

Make it Stitched / Why Stitched are a great choice for your curtains + blinds…

Curtain + Blind Buying Made Easy:

While organisation is key, there are so many plates spinning, it’s practically impossible for everything to go to plan. Be as prepared as you can be but accept that you will forget something or that not everything will go to plan. That’s ok too. It’s the memories that we create while living in the house, not the dramas we had getting there that we take with us!
